The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has officially commissioned the Safety Guards and launched the Life Jackets for Safety and Livelihoods programme, a strategic initiative designed to enhance safety and save lives across Ghana’s inland water bodies.
Speaking at the ceremony held at the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) forecourt, the Minister stated that the government has moved beyond education to action, and as a result, the initiative, “No Life Jacket, No Travelling.”

Joseph Nikpe commended the newly commissioned Safety Guards and charged them to ensure safety across all 1600 inland water communities in Ghana.
A total of 200 guards were carefully selected and trained to ensure that individuals wear life jackets before travelling on water bodies.
As part of the government’s efforts to ensure safety on water bodies, 20,000 life jackets have been made available across inland water communities for sale and rental.

For his part, the Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Dr Kamal-Deen Ali, pledged to ensure that as the regulator its mandate is implemented .
“We are not just launching a programme, we are initiating a lifesaving moment aimed at sustaining livelihood and protecting families and persons that depend on our waterways,” he said.

He further charged all citizens are advised to adhere to the directives of the Safety Guards and safety protocols when traveling on water bodies.
