Two persons, believed to be an adult and a child, are reported to have been swept away by floodwaters at Nurses Quarters Junction in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region following heavy rains on Tuesday, June 9.

The incident, however, is yet to be officially confirmed by authorities.

According to reports, the child was initially swept away by the strong currents, prompting the adult to attempt a rescue. Both are said to have subsequently been carried away by the floodwaters.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Awutu Senya East, Seth Sabah Serwonoo-Banini, disclosed the development while responding to an emergency situation involving flood victims and stranded commuters after a bridge along the Kasoa–Ashalaja road was compromised by the heavy rains.

Authorities are yet to provide further details on the identities of the victims or the status of any ongoing search and rescue efforts.

Meanwhile, the Awutu Senya East Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Nash Nyandey, has urged residents living along riverbanks and major drainage channels to remain vigilant, especially as the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has forecast more rainfall in the coming days.

He also appealed to the public to refrain from dumping refuse into drains, stressing that the practice significantly contributes to flooding and poses serious risks to lives and property.

The latest incident comes amid widespread flooding reported in several parts of the Greater Accra Region following hours of heavy rainfall, which has disrupted movement, submerged roads and affected homes and businesses.
