The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has handed over 141 seized firearms and 1,864 cartridges of ammunition to the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons for destruction, as part of ongoing efforts to prevent illicit weapons from re-entering circulation.

The handover was announced in a Facebook post on Thursday, June 11, by the Small Arms Commission, highlighting coordinated action between state institutions to strengthen arms control and enhance public safety.

The seized weapons included 121 pump-action guns, 12 single-barrel shotguns, one double-barrel shotgun, two local pistols, five military-pattern pistols, seven calibre 9mm ammunition rounds, and 1,864 cartridges.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, underscored the government’s commitment to national security and responsible weapons management.

A technical delegation led by the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mohammed Gali Salam, received the weapons on behalf of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons.

According to the Commission, the firearms will undergo marking and destruction in line with established national procedures, in fulfilment of its mandate to remove illicit and unserviceable weapons from circulation.

The exercise, the Commission noted, reflects strengthened collaboration among security and regulatory agencies, aimed at tackling the proliferation of illegal arms and safeguarding public safety.
