The Greater Accra Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Ricky Anokye Frimpong, has called for the reinstallation of public waste bins across the region as part of efforts to improve sanitation and waste management.

His appeal comes amid the ongoing “Clean Up Accra” campaign, a city-wide initiative by Zoomlion Ghana Limited in partnership with Channel One TV and the Ghana Police Service aimed at cleaning public spaces and mitigating the impact of flooding.

Speaking to Citi News during the exercise, Mr. Frimpong stressed the need for sustainable and long-term solutions to Ghana’s sanitation challenges.

“About seven years ago, most of our major roads were fitted with bins, but you go the next day and you don’t find them. The main challenge was ownership and responsibility. We must all take ownership because taxpayer money was used to procure these bins.

“It is therefore important that we collectively supervise and protect them to ensure they serve their intended purpose,” he said

He also expressed satisfaction with the level of public support and participation the Clean Up Accra initiative has received since its launch.

“The exercise has been well embraced by the public especially in Kaneshie. The traders helped us. We urge the communities to get involved,” he said.

The exercise focuses on desilting major drains and clearing streets of debris across communities to improve sanitation and enhance the free flow of rainwater, particularly during the rainy season.

The initiative covers areas including Circle, Madina, Mempeasem, Mallam, Kaneshie, Weija-Gbawe, etc., where sanitation teams and supporting agencies are working to remove waste from drains and public spaces as part of efforts to reduce flood risks.
