The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, in partnership with sanitation firm City Expert Group, has introduced vacuum sweeper trucks to help reduce waste and road dust across Kumasi.

Addressing journalists in Kumasi on the sidelines of a demonstration exercise, the Manager in charge of managing workers of the City Expert Group, Abubakar Shaibu, said the project is aimed at clearing dust and debris from roads.

He noted that the particles often block drains and waterways during rainfall, which contributes to flooding in the city.

He further disclosed that the company is ready to perform its duty to ensure a cleaner Kumasi and also prevent perennial flooding in the city.

He urged residents in the Kumasi Metropolis to support the government’s sanitation drive, adding that the goal is to improve hygiene and environmental health in Kumasi and the wider Ashanti Region.

Mr Shaibu cautioned traders in the Kumasi Central Business District to stop dumping dust on roadside gutters after sweeping.

“Try and dump dust at appropriate places after sweeping to support the Assembly’s agenda of reducing dust and debris on our roads,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the initiative will also protect the city’s tiled roads from damage, as dust buildup shortens their lifespan.

Some residents in Kumasi welcomed the initiative, saying the vacuum sweepers will help keep the city cleaner and reduce flooding during the rainy season.
