Tunisia appoint Hervé Renard as new coach after sacking Lamouchi

Tunisia have appointed experienced French coach Hervé Renard as the new head coach of the national team following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi after the country’s heavy defeat to Sweden at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Tunisian Football Federation moved swiftly to replace Lamouchi after the Carthage Eagles suffered a humiliating 5-1 loss to Sweden in their opening Group F match, a result that intensified pressure on the coaching staff and sparked widespread criticism from supporters and local media.

Lamouchi’s position had already come under scrutiny following disappointing performances in pre-World Cup friendlies against Austria and Belgium.

The former Stade Rennais coach, who was appointed in January 2026, leaves after just five months in charge, having recorded one win, one draw, and three defeats during his tenure.

Only hours before his dismissal, Lamouchi had publicly expressed confidence in his ability to succeed with Tunisia despite acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding the national team setup.

The federation has now turned to Renard, one of Africa’s most successful international coaches, in a bid to revive Tunisia’s World Cup campaign.

Renard is expected to arrive in Mexico immediately to take charge of the squad and will reportedly be accompanied by several members of his trusted backroom staff.

Wahbi Khazri is also expected to remain part of the technical team.

The 56-year-old Frenchman brings a wealth of international experience, having previously managed several national teams and guided both Zambia and Côte d’Ivoire to Africa Cup of Nations titles.

Tunisia will be hoping the managerial change provides an immediate boost as they prepare for crucial World Cup group-stage encounters against Japan and the Netherlands.

The Eagles of Carthage face a difficult task to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages alive following their opening defeat, with Renard now charged with restoring confidence and competitiveness within the squad.
