The Minority Caucus in Parliament has raised concerns over what it describes as the alleged encroachment and improper use of lands belonging to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).
The issue was brought to the attention of the House on Tuesday, June 16, when Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin questioned the status and utilisation of prime properties owned by the state broadcaster, particularly its lands at Kanda in Accra.
According to him, there are growing concerns that portions of GBC’s lands may have been encroached upon or repurposed without sufficient public accountability or explanation.
Addressing Parliament, Afenyo-Markin warned that any failure to safeguard the broadcaster’s assets could undermine its financial sustainability and operational effectiveness.
“We have become aware that the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s lands at Kanda are seeing serious encroachments. We even know that part of GBC’s land was used by the GRA, the building that the Finance Ministry has taken over.
“I want to remind the Minister for Government Communications that protecting the assets of GBC is part of his mandate, and so we need to know the ministerial actions being taken by the Minister in respect of GBC and how he is taking steps to protect and add value to the assets of GBC.”
The Minority Leader subsequently appealed to the Speaker to invite the Minister for Government Communications to brief Parliament on measures being taken to investigate the alleged encroachments, regularise land use where necessary, and safeguard GBC’s assets.
He argued that the corporation should not be deprived of critical properties that could contribute to its long-term operational and financial sustainability.
