The Timber Validation Committee (TVC) has condemned the recent mob attack and vandalism at the Forestry Commission’s timber checkpoint facility at Babatokuma in the Bono East Region.
In a statement issued on June 15, the Committee described the attack on Forestry Commission personnel and the destruction of state property as unlawful and unacceptable.
The incident occurred on June 9 at Babatokuma, near Kintampo, where a group of individuals reportedly attacked officers stationed at the checkpoint and damaged equipment and infrastructure belonging to the Forestry Commission.
“The TVC has expressed deep concern over the violence and attacks, especially as they undermine the efforts of the government and stakeholders in ensuring the sustainable management of Ghana’s forest resources,” the statement said.
The Committee noted that the attack could have serious implications for Ghana’s forest governance system, including efforts to combat illegal logging and ensure the sustainability of the country’s timber resources.
According to the TVC, law enforcement agencies must take decisive action to bring those responsible to justice and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
“The TVC therefore urges law enforcement agencies to take decisive action to bring all those involved in this heinous activity to book and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future,” it stated.
The Committee further called on relevant authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into the incident and ensure accountability.
It also appealed to all stakeholders to support the Forestry Commission in the discharge of its mandate to protect forest resources and uphold environmental laws.
The TVC emphasised that the attack was not only directed at Forestry Commission personnel and property but also represented a broader threat to Ghana’s forest resources.
“The Committee further notes that such acts have the potential to undermine investor confidence, particularly at a time when Ghana has distinguished itself as the first country in Africa and the second in the world to export Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) licensed timber,” the statement added.
The Committee reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at promoting sustainable forest management and protecting Ghana’s natural resources.
