The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has taken delivery of two locomotives and 20 freight wagons for container and cargo operations 11 days ahead of schedule.

Announcing this in a Facebook post, the Authority’s Chief Executive Officer, Frederick Appoh, said preparations are now underway for technical commissioning, driver evaluations, and final fit-to-run assessments before the equipment enters service on Ghana’s railway network.

The delivery marks a boost to Ghana’s rail freight capacity as the government seeks to strengthen transport infrastructure, improve logistics efficiency, and increase the role of rail in cargo movement.

The new rolling stock is expected to support freight operations on the country’s railway network and forms part of broader efforts to modernize the sector and reduce the cost of moving goods.

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe, in a separate Facebook post, described the delivery as a significant addition to Ghana’s rail assets, saying the locomotives and freight wagons would enhance freight movement, improve operational efficiency, and provide a more reliable and cost-effective means of transporting goods.

Nikpe said continued investment in the railway sector remains central to the government’s plans to build an integrated transport system that supports trade, creates jobs, and improves connectivity for businesses and communities.

The latest acquisition comes as Ghana continues efforts to expand and rehabilitate its railway infrastructure to support economic activity and strengthen links between production centres, ports, and inland markets.

Once commissioned, the locomotives and freight wagons are expected to increase freight handling capacity on the rail network and support the country’s long-term transport modernization agenda.
