The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has unanimously dismissed an application filed by former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo challenging her removal from office as Chief Justice and Justice of Ghana’s Supreme Court.

The ruling delivered on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, represents a significant setback for Justice Torkonoo, who had turned to the regional court to contest the process that led to her removal from office.

Details of the court’s reasoning were not immediately available at the time of publication.

However, the unanimous decision effectively ends her bid before the ECOWAS Court to challenge the legality of her removal.

Justice Torkonoo sought relief from the regional court after her removal from office, arguing that her rights had been violated during the process.

The case attracted considerable public attention in Ghana, where debates over judicial independence, due process and constitutional governance have accompanied developments surrounding her removal.

The ECOWAS Court’s decision leaves intact the actions taken against the former Chief Justice and Supreme Court judge.

Further details of the judgment, including the court’s findings and legal basis for dismissing the application, are expected to emerge following the release of the full ruling.
