Ghana’s automotive agenda needs strategic investment – Ghana Jet

The team lead of Ghana Jet, Eugene T. Sangmortey, has called for targeted investment in Ghana’s automotive industry, citing it as a major growth pole for the country’s economy if properly developed and supported.

He made the appeal while speaking on the theme “Driving Ghana Forward: The State of the Automotive Assembly Industry and Its Contribution to the Economy” on Thursday, June 25.

Mr. Sangmortey explained that the sector is gradually gaining traction, pointing to what he described as encouraging progress driven by both government policy direction and private sector participation.

He said the pace from policy formulation to implementation has been notably swift compared to other industrial sectors.

According to him, Ghana’s automotive agenda presents a clear opportunity to position the country as a manufacturing hub within the sub-region, provided stakeholders continue to align efforts and scale up investment.

He further noted that private sector actors have responded quickly to existing opportunities, helping to advance the vision of establishing Ghana as a competitive centre for vehicle assembly and related manufacturing activities.

Mr. Sangmortey also referenced global industrial patterns, explaining that successful automotive ecosystems are often built on strong supply chains and strategic localisation of components, a model Ghana can learn from as it develops its own sector.

He stressed that with sustained investment, policy consistency, and stronger collaboration between government and industry players, the automotive industry could become a significant driver of industrialisation, job creation, and long-term economic growth.

“Automotive is one of the sectors that when supported and given the right sought of support from government will be a major growth pole for the Ghanaian economy,” he stated.

The Ghana Partnership for Jobs and Economic Transformation Programme (Ghana JET), funded by the UK Government’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, supports systemic transformation and sustainable job creation in Ghana’s manufacturing sectors.

The 2026 Citi Business Festival is powered by Citi FM and Channel One TV in partnership with Absa Bank, and sponsored by Absa Bank, MTN Ghana, Zonda Tec Ghana Limited and Petra Trust.
