The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has disclosed that the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project is expected to be completed by December 2027 as part of efforts to address persistent flooding in the capital, particularly within the Odaw River Basin.

According to the minister, the project, which commenced in February 2024, comprises key interventions including drainage improvement, solid waste management and other flood mitigation measures aimed at enhancing climate resilience in flood-prone communities across Greater Accra.

Speaking in Parliament while responding to questions on the project, Adjei said more than $350 million has been earmarked for its implementation and assured lawmakers that adequate funding has been secured to ensure its successful completion.

He noted that ongoing desilting and dredging works on the Odaw River form a critical component of the GARID project and are expected to improve water flow and reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rains.

“The desilting and dredging contract for the Odaw River is being implemented as part of the GARID project. The project commenced in February 2024 and is scheduled to be completed by December 2027, with resources allocated under the GARID,” he said.
