The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly has handed over 1,450 mono desks to the Metro Directorate of Education as part of efforts to address the furniture deficit affecting basic schools in the metropolis.
The latest intervention comes barely a month after the Assembly distributed 1,170 dual desks to schools. The initiative was funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).
According to the Assembly, the move forms part of efforts to improve the learning environment and reduce the impact of inadequate furniture on teaching and learning.
Speaking during the handing-over ceremony on Friday, June 26, the Mayor of Tamale, Abu Takoro, affirmed that further distributions will be made in the coming months, with attention also being given to furniture needs at the early childhood education level.
“Let me promise you that by 2028, the Tamale Metro will phase out the furniture deficit in the metropolis,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Tamale Metropolitan Director of Education, Nelson Konlanm, disclosed that the current furniture deficit in the metropolis stands at about 80%.
He said the latest intervention, together with previous distributions, is expected to reduce the deficit to about 60% expressing optimism that sustained support will help address furniture shortages across all levels of education.
