The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has attributed delays in firefighting operations at the Circle–Odawna fire scene to severe accessibility challenges caused by flooding in the area.
Assistant Divisional Officer, ADO I Alex King Nartey, explained that floodwaters submerged access routes to the affected area, making it extremely difficult for fire crews to reach and effectively combat the blaze in its early stages.
Speaking to Channel One News on Monday, June 29, he said the situation significantly hindered initial response efforts, despite attempts by firefighters to contain the fire.
According to him, the entire vicinity was heavily flooded at the time of the incident, preventing emergency vehicles and personnel from getting close enough to the fire scene.
He noted that conditions have since begun to improve as floodwaters gradually recede, allowing firefighters better access to the area to intensify ongoing operations.
He added that fire personnel remain on site and are working to ensure the blaze is fully brought under control while limiting further damage.
“Initially, our men tried to get close to fight the fire, but to be honest, they couldn’t get very close. Even though they tried their best to contain the fire, accessibility was the main problem,” he stated.
The fire, which started in the morning, is yet to be completely extinguished.
The blaze broke out on Monday, June 29, opposite the Adabraka Market in Accra as heavy rains continued to affect parts of the capital. The cause of the fire is yet to be established, with several structures already impacted.
