The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has called for a broader national response to drug abuse, describing it as a public health, social and development challenge that extends beyond law enforcement.

Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama at the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day) commemoration on Monday, July 6, 2026, Mr. Debrah said drug abuse continues to threaten families, communities and the future of Ghana’s youth.

“Drug abuse is more than a security challenge. It is a public health, social and developmental issue that threatens families, communities and the potential of our young people,” he said.

He said the government remains committed to intensifying the fight against illicit drug trafficking while expanding access to treatment, recovery and reintegration services for people struggling with addiction.

According to him, the government’s approach also prioritises prevention through investments in education, skills development and employment opportunities for young people.

“This administration remains focused on creating opportunities for young people through education, skills development and employment because prevention begins with hope, purpose and opportunity,” he said.

The Chief of Staff urged young people to avoid drug abuse and safeguard their future.

“To every young Ghanaian: your future is priceless, protect it,” he said.

The event, held under the theme “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” brought together government officials, security agencies, civil society organisations, development partners, traditional and religious leaders, and young people to reaffirm their commitment to tackling drug abuse and illicit trafficking through prevention, enforcement, rehabilitation and sustained collaboration.
