Nana Ama Bonsu has officially assumed the stool name Nana Yaa Akyaa II after undergoing the necessary traditional rites to become the 15th Asantehemaa of the Asante Kingdom.

The Queen’s enstoolment was completed on Monday, July 6, 2026, following a series of customary ceremonies that marked her formal ascension to the revered Asantehemaa stool.

Nana Yaa Akyaa II, succeeds Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who joined her ancestors in August 2025 after serving as Asantehemaa since 2017.

Her selection as the next occupant of the stool was made by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in line with established traditional processes of the Asante Kingdom.

As the new Asantehemaa, Nana Yaa Akyaa II assumes the role of the traditional mother of the Asantehene, providing counsel on matters of tradition and culture while serving as the custodian of Asante customs and heritage.

The Asantehemaa stool dates back to the early years of the Asante Kingdom, with Nana Nyaako Kusiamoa becoming the first occupant from 1701 to 1722.

She was succeeded by Nana Nkatia Abamo (1722–1740) and Nana Akua Afriyie (1740–1768), followed by other notable Asantehemaa such as Nana Konadu Yiadom I (1768–1809), Nana Akosua Adoma (1809–1819), Nana Ama Serwaa (1819–1828), and Nana Yaa Dufie (1828–1836).

The lineage continued through Nana Afua Sarpon (1836–1857), Nana Afua Kobi I (1857–1884), Nana Yaa Akyaa I (1884–1917), and Nana Konadu Yiadom II (1917–1945).

More recent occupants of the stool include Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko (1945–1977), Nana Afua Serwaa Kobi Ampem II (1977–2016), and Nana Konadu Yiadom III (2017–2025).
