The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will use all available means, including demonstrations, to prevent the Supreme Court from entertaining a suit seeking an interpretation of the presidential term limit provisions in the 1992 Constitution.
The party’s position follows a writ filed by Ghanaian teacher Ganiwu Alhassan at the Supreme Court, asking the court to interpret Article 66(2) of the Constitution, which states that a person shall not be elected to serve as President for more than two terms.
The suit argues that the provision only bars a person from serving two consecutive terms and does not prevent an individual who has previously served two separate, non-consecutive terms from contesting the presidency again.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, July 10, the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, said the NPP would not hesitate to take steps it deems necessary to protect the Constitution and the country’s peace.
“All options are on the table for some of us as individuals and for the NPP as a political party. We are all enjoined to protect the sanctity of our Constitution, the peace of our country, and our fidelity to the law and the Constitution,” he said.
Awuku stressed that the party has a responsibility to defend the constitutional order and would not allow any attempt that could undermine Ghana’s stability.
“We cannot shirk that responsibility at any point in time. So all options remain on the table because somebody wants to disturb the peace of our country, and our Constitution also enjoins us to protect and defend our Constitution and that of our Republic,” he stated.
He warned that any action perceived to threaten Ghana’s peace and security would not be accepted.
“Anybody attempting to undermine the security of our country and the peace of our nation definitely cannot be a friend of Ghana,” he added.
