Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, Kwaku Kwarteng, has petitioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to institute disciplinary proceedings against the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, over his role in an appeal relating to the Obuasi West Constituency executive elections.
In a petition addressed to the NPP General Secretary and copied to the National Steering Committee, National Disciplinary Committee, Ashanti Regional Chairman, Ashanti Regional Secretary and Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, the Obuasi West MP accused the Effiduase-Asokore legislator of misconduct and called for sanctions under Article 4 of the party’s constitution.
Kwaku Kwarteng is also seeking a reversal of the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee’s recommendation on the constituency executive elections appeal.
According to the petition, the Constituency Appeals Committee had upheld the disqualification of Kofi Owusu Ansah, an aspiring Youth Organiser, Joseph Kwabena Bonsu, an aspiring Second Vice Chairman, and Kofi Appianin Ennin, an aspiring First Vice Chairman.
However, the committee indicated that its position could change if the party could establish that Kofi Appianin Ennin’s independent candidature in the 2024 general election, and the support he received from Kofi Owusu Ansah and Joseph Kwabena Bonsu, resulted from a party decision.
The petitioner alleged that Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie affirmed that claim before the Appeals Committee.
He further stated that the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee, in a recommendation dated July 6, 2026, treated the claim as an established fact and subsequently directed that Kofi Appianin Ennin be cleared to contest for the position of First Vice Chairman for the Obuasi West Constituency.
According to the petition, the recommendation was based on the conclusion that Ennin’s independent candidature in the 2024 general election formed part of a deliberate party strategy to draw votes away from political opponents.
Kwaku Kwarteng, however, contended that the claim of party authorisation was false and brought the party into disrepute.
He is therefore asking the National Disciplinary Committee to commence disciplinary proceedings against Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie and impose any appropriate sanctions under the party’s constitution, including a reprimand, suspension or disqualification from holding party office.
“I respectfully petition that: The National Disciplinary Committee commence disciplinary proceedings against Hon. Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie forthwith, in respect of his affirmation to the Constituency Appeals Committee and the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee, of a claim of Party authorisation that I contend is false and that amounts to bringing the name of the Party into disrepute.
“The Committee should impose the necessary sanctions under Article 4 of the Party’s Constitution, including, as it considers appropriate, reprimand, suspension, or disqualification from holding office or position within the Party for a stated period,” he demanded.
The Obuasi West MP is also requesting the party to reverse the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee’s recommendation clearing Kofi Appianin Ennin to contest the First Vice Chairman position and reinstate the Appeals Committee’s earlier disqualification of Ennin, Kofi Owusu Ansah and Joseph Kwabena Bonsu.
He further requested an acknowledgement of receipt of the petition and to be informed of the procedure and timeline for determining the matter.
