The Ghana Police Service has arrested 54 suspects and seized large quantities of suspected narcotic substances during a series of intelligence-led operations across several suburbs of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

The operation, conducted by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team (SOT), forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on illicit drug trafficking networks and criminal activities in communities identified as hotspots for the trade in narcotic substances.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 15, the Police said the coordinated operations targeted a number of crime-prone areas, including Atwima-Koforidua, Abuakwa, Sofo Line Lorry Station, Ash Town, Ahwia, Bantama, Aputuogya, Krofrom, Pankrono, Tafo, Twumduase, Krofrom-Colombia, and Alarba.

According to the Police, the operations resulted in the arrest of 54 suspects, made up of 49 males and five females. Among those arrested were 11 Malian nationals and 38 Ghanaians, all being investigated for various alleged drug-related offences.

Items retrieved during the operations include several quantities of Tramadol tablets of different strengths, hundreds of sealed packages containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances, and other materials allegedly used in processing narcotics.

The Police also recovered 13 bottles of fruit juice branded FEMUDE suspected to contain narcotic substances, 34 narcotics processing materials, 13 pairs of scissors, 11 boxes of assorted foreign cigarettes, 23 mobile phones, two casino jackpot machines and four unregistered motorcycles.

The Police said all 54 suspects remain in custody together with the recovered exhibits and are assisting with investigations. They are expected to be arraigned before the court upon the completion of investigations.

The Service assured the public that similar operations will continue nationwide as authorities intensify efforts to combat organised crime, drug trafficking, and related offences.

“Service remains resolute in its commitment to identifying, arresting, and prosecuting persons engaged in criminal activities,” the statement said.

Police also appealed to members of the public to continue supporting law enforcement agencies with credible and timely information, stressing that community cooperation remains critical in maintaining safety, security and public order across the country.
