Preparations are underway at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi for the third-day Adua prayers in honour of the late King of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, with heavy security deployed to maintain peace and order during the observance.
The death of the Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom was announced on Monday, July 13, 2026.
The third-day prayers are being held in accordance with Islamic tradition, with Imams and Mallams expected to lead special prayers for the repose of the late King’s soul.
The observance marks an important stage in the funeral rites before the traditional succession process begins.
Following the completion of the third-day prayers, a date is expected to be announced for the seventh-day Adua, which is likely to take place next week.
The seventh-day prayers will serve as the final Islamic observance for the late King.
After the seventh-day prayers, Dagbon’s customary succession rites will commence. As part of the traditional process, a Regent will be officially installed to assume responsibility for the kingdom until the final funeral rites are completed.
The Regent will oversee the affairs of the kingdom while preparations continue for the late King’s final funeral ceremonies.
Once those rites have been concluded, the process to select and enskin a new Overlord of Dagbon will begin in accordance with Dagbon customs and traditions.
