Ghana’s transition to cleaner transport technology has taken a significant step forward with the launch of the country’s first fully electric heavy-duty tipper truck, as construction firm Big Aidoo Construction Limited placed an inaugural order for ten units.
The vehicle, unveiled by Zonda Tec Ghana in partnership with SINOTRUK, is designed to provide construction and mining companies with a zero-emission alternative to conventional diesel-powered tipper trucks, marking the entry of electric mobility into Ghana’s heavy-duty industrial transport market.
Marketing Director of Zonda Tec Ghana, Jelly Bai, said the electric truck is aimed at reducing operating costs while supporting the country’s sustainability agenda.
“We introduced this truck to help contractors reduce fuel and maintenance costs. Unlike diesel trucks, electric vehicles do not require routine engine servicing, and that makes them more cost-effective while contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment,” she said.
Manufacturers say the V7-X Electric Tipper combines lower operating costs with performance comparable to conventional heavy-duty diesel trucks.
Sales Manager at the SINOTRUK Ghana Office, Tong Changxu, said the truck is powered by a 340-kilowatt electric motor, producing about 462 horsepower, with a 400-kilowatt-hour battery pack capable of travelling between 170 and 180 kilometres on a full load.
“The truck is equipped with a 340-kilowatt motor, equivalent to a diesel engine, delivering about 462 horsepower, which is higher than many conventional tipper trucks. With its 400-kilowatt-hour battery, it can travel around 170 to 180 kilometres when fully loaded. With the right charging infrastructure, operators can significantly reduce fuel costs while improving overall working efficiency,” he explained.
The launch also secured its first major commercial endorsement, with Big Aidoo Construction Limited purchasing ten of the electric trucks, signalling growing confidence in electric heavy-duty vehicles within Ghana’s construction industry.
Personal Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer of Big Aidoo Construction Limited, Wisdom Hedidor, said the company was confident in investing in the new technology despite it being introduced to the Ghanaian market for the first time.
“Buying ten electric tipper trucks at once shows the confidence we have in the technology and in Zonda Tec. Although this is new to Ghana, we believe in the brand and the way they have done business with us. We are excited to be among the first to adopt it,” he said.
