A farming community in the Asutifi North District of the Brong Ahafo Region, Atuahene, has been thrown into a state of mourning over the death of seven family members including a nine year old, in a gory car accident today [Monday].

The seven were returning from a one-week funeral ceremony of a relative in Kumasi identified as Inspector Ernest Boateng Abiah, a deceased police officer.

One of the seven deceased persons has been identified as Josuah K. Acheampong, an Assistant Budget officer at the Asutifi North District Assembly.

The District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Teddy Damptey Brown, who confirmed the incident to Citi News, said the incident occurred at about 11:45pm between Wamahinso and Atuahene on the Kenyasi-Sunyani highway.

“At about 11:45pm, I had a call that there was an accident at a spot between Wamahinso and Atuahene section, so we left for the accident scene and saw two badly damaged vehicles due to the impact of the crash”, he confirmed.

He said the vehicles included a Toyota Landcruiser vehicle with registration number GW 1897-17 driven by one Kofi Danso, and an Opel Astra taxi with registration number GW 1139-Ydriven by Kwaku Isaac.

The Toyota Landcruiser vehicle is believed to belong to the former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, and Member of Parliament for the Asutifi South Constituency, Alhaji Collins Dauda.

He explained that on reaching the scene, the police realized all occupants of the taxi cab were trapped in the vehicle due to the impact of the crash, and so they managed to remove two occupants who were still alive.

He however  indicated that the five died on the spot.

“We pulled out two from the vehicle who were still alive and we sent them to the St. Elizabeth Hospital at Hwidiem whereas the other five died on the spot. So I visited the hospital to check on the two and was told they also passed on this morning meaning all seven occupants of the Opel Astra all died”, he lamented.

DSP Teddy Brown said the driver of the Toyota Land-cruiser who is on admission at the Goaso Government Hospital is under investigation and is assisting police in their investigations.

He advised motorists and road users to be disciplined, avoid overloading and abide by the road safety regulations due to the bad and curvy nature of the roads in the area.

Citi News‘ checks indicate a high level delegation from the assembly led by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Anthony Mensah, visited the bereaved family to console them for their loss.

The deceased persons are being kept at the St. Elizabeth Hospital at Hwidiem awaiting autopsy.
