The National Association of Charismatic and Christian Churches (NACC), have backed the statement made by Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams in support of the National Cathedral project being facilitated by the government.
In a statement, the Charismatic and Christian Churches said they are in full support of the Archbishop’s endorsement, and they associate themselves with his comments, as the the Chairman of the Association.
The statement signed by the General Secretary, Rev. Gideon Titi Ofei, said the comments by Archbishop Duncan-Williams “reflects the views and opinions of many Christians” hence they are in full support of his stance on government’s decision to construct a national cathedral.
“The National Association of Charismatic and Christian Churches (NACCC) fully supports and associates itself with a statement made by the Chairman of the Association, His Eminence Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams in support of the construction of the proposed national cathedral by government in a sermon delivered to his congregation on Sunday 11th November 2018.”
The Association also described the government’s decision to construct the National Cathedral as a symbol of appreciation to Christians in the country whose acts of giving in their various churches have helped in improving the socio-economic conditions in the country through the establishment of schools, hospitals, training centers and other charitable initiatives.
“The cathedral, which will house a 5000-seater Hall, expandable to 15000; baptistery; chapels; conference center, and Africa’s first Bible Museum and Documentation Center will not only serve as a place of worship, but also as a symbol of appreciation to the over 70% Christians whose contributions have led to the provision of the above.”
The Head Pastor of the Action Chapel International, Archbishop Duncan-Williams, over the weekend in a sermon slammed Christians who are opposing the construction of the National Cathedral.
Archbishop Duncan-Williams is of the view this is a project that is totally selfless and will undoubtedly benefit Ghanaians.
“Never have I seen any president who came into office and said I want to build a National Cathedral to the name of the lord… At least it is one thing he cannot will to his kids or his immediate family. At least it is something somebody is determined to do for the benefit of the name of the Lord and for the benefit of others and humanity.”
Archbishop Duncan-Williams also downplayed concerns over the funding of the cathedral.
“‘Who is funding it? Who is giving to it? Who is financing it? Where is the money coming from?’ As if somebody has asked you for your money. And we’ll oppose it, even when we don’t understand it. We won’t ask the questions, we criticize things, we fight everything,” he stated.
Background
The Akufo-Addo administration envisions the National Cathedral to serve as a national non-denominational Christian worship centre for the country.
President Nana Akufo-Addo cut the sod for the construction of the national cathedral on March 6, 2017, as part of events that marked Ghana’s 60th-anniversary celebration.
The government is to provide 14-acres of public land for the project while the Christian community and individuals are to fund the construction.
Reception towards the cathedral from Ghanaians has been mixed. Whilst it has been generally well received by various leaders in the Christian community, the government faced some criticism over its priorities.
President Nana Akufo-Addo is keen on making the cathedral one of his government’s legacies and he has described it as “a priority among priorities.”

The National Association of Charismatic and Christian Churches (NACCC) fully supports and associates itself with a statement made by the chairman of the Association, His Eminence Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams in support of the construction of the proposed national cathedral by government in a sermon delivered to his congregation on Sunday 11th November 2018.
His statement reflects the views and the opinions of many Christians across the length and breadth of the country.
The Christian community in Ghana from pre-independence to date has made immense contributions to national development and stabilizing of democracy evidenced by the construction of schools including nursery, primary , secondary and vocational schools as well as, teacher training colleges and universities.
In hamlets, villages, districts and cities across the country, missions hospitals have provided the much needed health services to both the poor and the rich.
The cathedral which will house a 5000-seater Hall, expandable to 15000; baptistery; chapels; conference center, and Africa’s first Bible Museum and Documentation Center will not only serve as a place of worship but also as a symbol of appreciation to the over 70% Christians whose contributions have led to the provision of the above.
Again the Cathedral will not only serve as a place of worship but also as a tourist attraction and a national asset capable of generating economic benefits.
It is against this background that the NACCC supports the statement by the His Eminence the Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and calls on Ghanaians to support the President’s decision on the Cathedral.
NACCC also commends the President of the Republic of Ghana His Excellency, President Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo for his decision to construct a National Cathedral for the Christian Community in Ghana and offers him our fullest support. NACCC welcomes all positive and constructive criticisms to advance this noble objective.
