PEG Africa, a solar company, has established a learning centre at Beposo Manhyia, a rural village near Wassa Akropong in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region.

Through the PEG Boafo initiative, the company has established a PEG Learning Centre with a facelift and installation of bright solar powered lights within the Beposo Manhyia Basic School, aimed at providing a conducive atmosphere for evening studies.

The community is currently without grid electricity.

Medical consultation, as well as delicate procedures such as administering injections, was usually done at night under torchlight.

Students from the basic school could only study at night under weak, unhealthy sources of light like kerosene lamp.

The community health facility has also been improved with solar lights and a PEG Solar TV for the waiting room to enhance effective healthcare delivery at all times of the day.

These facilities are expected to serve 98 students and about 450 residents in and around the community.

Presenting the projects at a grand durbar, Michael Avle, Head of Marketing and Partnerships at PEG Ghana stressed on PEG’s commitment to giving back to the community as part of the company’s social impact initiatives to provide underserved communities with better light and ultimately, a better life. He added that PEG will continue to introduce useful and innovative products onto the Ghanaian market to deliver more value to customers and improve their quality of life.

The Omanhene of the Beposo Traditional area Nana Tieku II community in his address expressed gratitude to PEG Africa for choosing his people to be the proud recipients of this special initiative, he indicated that the projects will help develop the students in the community into the next generation of leaders and also greatly improve the well-being of the people.

In a speech read on her behalf, the Municipal Director of Health, Mrs. Felicia Amissah indicated that the solar lights at the community health post is a great relief for the health workers there because it will complement their efforts in giving off their best to serve the community.

Mr. Aggrey Forson the Municipal Director of Education, who was also represented at the event commended PEG for providing a congenial space for teaching and learning for the children, he further pledged to follow up on the uncompleted community Junior High School block which has not seen any structural progress in years, in order to afford respite to the children of the Beposo Manhyia community who currently have to walk long distances to neighboring communities to continue their education after primary school.

The project handoff durbar included some impressive performances from the students in the community who could not hide their joy.

PEG Africa is West Africa’s leading PAYG solar company – providing solar home systems on credit to underserved consumers in Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal – with more than 400 staff, 75 rurally based service centers and 500 commission based sales agents.

In Ghana alone, the company has delivered solar energy to well over 200,000 people.

As a company with a strong social mission, the company also support some rural communities with free solar lighting for education and healthcare delivery through our PEG Boafo initiative.

PEG also presented various rewards and prizes including solar powered fans to loyal customers within the community. A free health screening was also organized on the sidelines of the event with about 150 people being tested for HIV/AIDS, high blood pressure and other vital health checks.

PEG has in the past extended this gesture to 5 communities in the Volta, Eastern and Central Regions of Ghana, with over 2,000 direct beneficiaries.
