The principal of the University of Education Winneba (UEW) has critiqued the Minister in charge of Tertiary Education, Kwesi Yankah’s handling of the school’s impasse.

Speaking on Citi FM/Citi TV‘s News Analysis Programme, The Big Issue on Saturday, Mr. Nsoh said he was disappointed Mr. Yankah had not done much to resolve the impasse at UEW.

“He is the Minister of Education in charge of Tertiary Education. Ask him what he has done. He is handling the issue with kid gloves. He has allowed some other people to take over the place while he is sitting far away. He has not done enough. He also has the same concerns as I do.”

There has been ensuing chaos at the UEW campus owing to what has been described as a leadership crisis.

There have been calls for the Vice Chancellor of the school, Prof. Afful Broni to resign.

The demand is also accompanied by calls for lecturers and other staff who have been sacked to be immediately reinstated.

The University of Education, Winneba was shut down indefinitely after students’ protests against the school’s Vice-Chancellor turned chaotic.

Head of the Central Regional Security Council who is also the Central Regional Minister, Kwamina Duncan announced the closure of the school after visiting the campus on Thursday morning.

Kwamina Duncan told the media that “on the advice of the Regional Security Council, we cannot allow the university to be in session.”

In the course of the three days of protests by the students, buildings and vehicles had their windows shattered.

Police officers were forced to use tear gas to disperse protesting students.

The students in retaliation pelted stones at the police leaving at least one officer injured.

A police reinforcement team was subsequently sent from Accra to restore calm on campus.

The students say there is a leadership crisis at the school and have been demonstrating to demand the reinstatement of some sacked lecturers.
