Ghana beyond aid charter not necessary – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Former Deputy Information Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has described President Nana Akufo-Addo’s unveiling of a Ghana Beyond Aid charter as needless.

According to him as the economy of the country continues to develop, the aid it receives will dwindle hence government’s focus should rather be on accelerating the rate of the country’s development.

[contextly_sidebar id=”MDylaAuwYBoO28CGvjbkfX6dedA9NJT7″]President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo earlier this week received a  charter on Ghana Beyond Aid which outlines the roadmap for Ghana’s determination to be a self-reliant country.

Speaking on Citi TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, Felix Kwakye Ofosu insisted that the move is misplaced.

“So once we become a middle-income country, the aid will dwindle. So as we grow and develop, aid will naturally cease, so you don’t need to launch a specific program, call it fanciful name, hold elaborate ceremonies, set up committees to go and draw up reports and charts and launch and think that you are okay.”

“So once every government comes and continues to add incrementally to our progress we will eventually become a developed country someday. Once we get there, the aid will not come naturally, so there is really no need to go create an institution or committee or have a special agreement to get us out of aid. What we need to be doing is to do things that would increase our rate of development country quicker,” he said.

In February, President Nana Akufo-Addo received a strategy document and Charter that outlines the roadmap for Ghana to achieve self-reliance and the vision of a ‘Ghana beyond aid’.

The strategic document was prepared and presented to the president by the 13-member Ghana Beyond Aid Charter Committee, which the president constituted in June 2018.

The document is expected to be laid before Parliament and will be a national policy document that will guide the actions of the government, its agencies and other stakeholders.
