The current status of sports betting legislation in Ghana

Among the West African countries, Ghana is second to Nigeria in terms of liberal gambling policies. Ghanaian authorities allow casino companies like Betway Ghana, to operate without restraint. If you visit the country, you’ll come across many land-based casinos. The casinos are usually packed with punters playing poker, slots, and table games.

Accra, which is the capital city, hosts over six casinos. You can also find a casino in other towns like Tema and Kusami. The multi-ethnic nature of the population that includes foreigners has influenced the Ghanaian community. They were opposed to gambling because of strict religious beliefs. But foreign invasion has slowly washed out the beliefs among the youth.

Gambling legislation

There is a leniency in the gambling laws that allow a freethinking approach by casino companies and gamers. A gaming act passed in 2006 is the last piece of legislation on gambling in Ghana. This was the second act long after the first was passed in 1960.

One of the products of the gaming act was the creation of the Gaming Commission of Ghana. The mandate of the body is to supervise, regulate, and control operators in the sector.

In the early days of the commission, it operated as a sovereign and respected body. Any company that was found breaking betting rules and regulations was punished or even shut down. The commission brought some sanity in the gambling sector in Ghana.

However, the commission’s mandate was not defined regarding online gambling. This lacuna in the gambling legislation leaves online gambling ungoverned in Ghana. As a result, betting companies like Betway can access the market freely.

Online gambling legislation

There are increasing concerns among Ghanaians about the lack of online gambling legislation. There are great benefits that come with gambling laws. The main concern is the establishment of a licensing system. Such a system will offer the government a defined structure to collect revenue from gambling.

The regulations would allow the government to collect licensing fees from casino providers before entering the Ghanaian market. The companies will also remit taxes upon making profits. The authorities in Ghana must have learned from other jurisdictions that are earning revenue in billions from gambling activities.

It is in the public interest for the government to legalize online gambling. The huge revenues generated from the sector could be channelled to improve other public sectors like hospitals and schools.

What does the future hold for gambling in Ghana?

Gamblers in Ghana should prepare for a bright future because the country is using a more liberal approach. The biggest beneficiaries will be sports betting enthusiasts because most online operators like Betway offer odds related to sports activities. Moreover, there are usually enormous prices to be won in this category.

The government will also have to balance its approach to gambling so as not to plunge the youth into gambling addiction. The online gambling legislation should contain clauses that compel the casino providers to be responsible. The legislation should also consider how they can protect land-based casinos.
