Confusion has rocked the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Lawra Constituency of the Upper West Region after some armed persons, believed to be loyalists of the party in the area hijacked the official pickup of their constituency chairman, Alhaji Mohammed Donkor.

Citi News sources at Lawra indicate that the incident occurred in the town on Sunday [November 22, 2020] at about 11:30 pm when pro-NPP youth purported to be supporters of the Member of Parliament for the Lawra constituency, Anthony Abaefaa Karbo allegedly attacked the driver of the constituency chairman and confiscated the vehicle after threatening him and other occupants with machetes.

The Lawra constituency Chairman of the NPP confirmed the incident to Citi News and said “we returned from Brifor Chaa where we went for a campaign. So when we got to Lawra I asked the driver to go and drop some people who travelled from the village to support us in the campaign. So it was on his way that Karbo’s boys attacked him with cutlasses and took my vehicle away”.

He said the driver and the occupants all escaped unhurt, adding that the matter has since been reported to the Lawra municipal police command for investigation.

Meanwhile, the Upper West regional organizer of the NPP, Mustapher Goveh has indicated that the matter has been brought to the attention of the regional party executives.

He said plans have already commenced to suspend the Lawra constituency chairman because evidence has shown that he was using the said party vehicle to campaign against the incumbent MP Anthony Abaefaa Karbo who double as a deputy minister for roads and highway.

He further disclosed that some regional executives have been dispatched to the Lawra constituency to ensure the situation does not escalate.

A leading member of a group supporting the constituency chairman, Kuun-im Richard is accusing the regional executives of taking sides in a long-standing feud between the MP and the Chairman. He said there have been several complaints by the chairman about disregard on his person and the party structures by the MP to the executives but that no action has been taken.
