Calm has returned to Kumasi Girls Senior High School and St. Louis Senior High School in the Ashanti Region after some students protested against the decision not to allow them to go home for a mid-semester break following a surge in covid-19 cases nationwide.
The Ghana Education Service, GES, on Monday directed heads of Senior High Schools to allow students to continue to stay in school since there has been a rise in cases.
Some students of St. Louis and Kumasi Girls Senior Schools on receiving the information on Monday evening resisted the move and vandalized school property.
A team of Police and Military personnel were deployed to the school to restore calm.
“As at now, the schools are calm because we sent men in there. We will continue to monitor the situation,” the acting Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP David Agyemang Adjem said to Citi News.
The Ghana Education Service rescinded an earlier directive for final year Senior High students to go home for the six-day mid-semester break.
The GES had previously declared that all form students were from Tuesday, July 20 to Sunday, July 25, 2021, to enjoy the mid-sem break.
But the management of the Service in a new statement said it had to reverse the directive upon consultation with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to restrict the “mass movement of students due to the recent outbreak of COVID-19”.
So far, several students in over 300 Senior High Schools have tested positive for COVID-19.
