Voter registration: Police engage political parties over scuffle in Upper West Akim

The Adeiso District Police Command is currently meeting with political actors in the Upper West Akim District and officials of the Electoral Commission.

This follows three days of continuous heavy confrontations and exchanges between followers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Today’s meeting is necessary for the police to find a truce in the aftermath of yesterday’s machete fight between activists of the two major political parties at the registration centre of the ongoing limited registration exercise.

Supporters of one of the parties challenged the eligibility of a registrant and ended up exchanging fisticuffs with the other group.

After being overpowered, they regrouped and launched a counterattack to overpower the group, destroying motorbikes and plastic chairs at the registration centre, which halted the process.

An hour later, the other group also visited the registration centre with reinforcements and, in a reprisal attack with machetes, chased out the other group. The timely intervention of the police prevented casualties.

Citi News can confirm that the District Security Council is currently in a meeting with the leadership of the two political parties and the EC to find lasting solutions.
