The campaign team of the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Hopeful, Alhaji Abdul Rahman, has denied reports that he was forced by President Nana Akufo-Addo to drop out of the race.
Alhaji Abdul Rahman, also known as Alhaji Short, pulled out of the race to ensure peace within the party and government, his Campaign Manager, Kaena Marfo stated.
“We the team decided that we need to withdraw from the race so that the acrimony going on will come down so the NPP government will have the peace of mind to govern,” he told Citi News.
Alhaji Short was one of the favourites to win the Chairmanship position when the NPP goes to Congress in July.
He is reported to have been asked by President Akufo-Addo to step down.
But Kwabena Marfo insisted “that is not true.”
Four to go
Alhaji Short’s withdrawal leaves four persons vying for the NPP Chairmanship.
They are acting Chairman of the NPP, Freddie Blay, Stephen Ayensu Ntim, Dr Richard Amoako Baah and David Kankam Boadu.
Kwabena Marfo, in an earlier interview on Eyewitness News, said Alhaji Short has not yet thrown his weight behind any of the remaining aspirants.
Fight for executive positions
Over 40 people are currently vying to hold various executive positions in the NPP.
Vetting of the aspirants began on Monday, May 28, 2018, with that of Chair aspirants slated for today, Friday.
The NPP is expected to hold its National Delegates Conference in July 2018 to elect their national executives.
