Member of Occupy Ghana Ace Kojo Annan Ankomah, has welcomed the President Nana Addo’s response to the joint petition by Citi FM and Occupy Ghana on the ‘health crisis’ situation in the country.
The Presidency in a letter signed by Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, said the necessary steps would be taken to address the concerns raised in the petition.
[contextly_sidebar id=”vgNDAT2BqmJkMzYPLh9McotrX3k5Fg8B”]Mr. Kojo Ankomah, a lawyer, described the president’s response as excellent adding that it indicates that government is willing to engage.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, Ace Ankomah said that his past advocacy works points to a fact that shows that leaders in the country sometimes need help in solving societal problems rather than accusations and arguments.
“It is the first step, it is a very good first step that the president acknowledges that this is a letter he must say he has received and must get back to us. It shows a willingness to engage.
“As we have done this advocacy work, often we have found out that the people we are engaging with sometimes need more of our help than our arguments. And so if the president says he wants to engage, then it is a good first step. Let’s see the level of engagement.”
He further advocated for alternative measures in addressing some problems affecting the country rather than the use of lawsuits.
“If we have one or two meetings, and we get a roadmap that in the next year all these hospitals are going to get built, in the next six months we are going to institute the emergency response system, we would have achieved our aim without firing a shot. It is not everything you go to war over.”
“In some cases, you can achieve your aim without the aggravation of legal processes and taking the hard stand. Ghana is the beneficiary.”
Citi FM, Occupy Ghana petitions Presidency
Citi FM and Occupy Ghana earlier petitioned President Nana Akufo-Addo to demand the operationalization of all newly built but abandoned healthcare facilities.
The petitioners are also pushing for a comprehensive Emergency Response System (ERS) in Ghana.
The two petitioners contend that the matters at hand have “reached a crisis point.”
“The matters now require drastic measures, one of which is our request herein that the President takes urgent steps to operationalize the facilities and institute the ERS throughout Ghana.”
They urged the president to “put in place and publish a clear roadmap with timelines for addressing the matters.”
Presidency responds to Petition
The Office of the President has however acknowledged receipt of a joint petition presented by Citi FM and Occupy Ghana demanding the operationalization of all newly built but abandoned healthcare facilities.
