The Minister of Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has dissolved the Governing Board of Prempeh College over its alleged role in the sale of the school’s lands.
The Minister has also directed the establishment of an Interim Management Committee to oversee the affairs of the school.
The Minister visited the school following protests by the Prempeh Old Boys Association against the sale of the scho0l’s lands.
The Association accused the authorities of selling parts of the school’s lands to private developers for commercial activities.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh described the development as unacceptable, adding that encroachment on school lands will affect academic activities in the school.
The Minister says such developments are likely to affect the future expansion of the school’s infrastructure.
He says the Board has no power to sell the school’s lands, and therefore ordered the demolition of some structures on the sold out land.
“I am dissolving the governing board of the school that decided to do this. If those who came before us decided to sell pieces of the school’s lands, would we have been able to expand it?”
The Private developer who is building within the walls of the school ignored an order by the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly to halt the ongoing project.
The Education Minister also directed the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service to investigate the role of the headmaster in the sale of lands.
Encroachment of Prempeh College lands worrying – Old Boys
The Old Boys Association of Prempeh College raised concerns about the activities of encroachers on the lands.
Several calls have been made by parents, guardians, and students of the school about the situation. Many said that the situation was a threat to the safety of the students.
“The Old Boys, as far as I’m concerned, are totally against it. The Old Boys formed a very serious constituency of all stakeholders, and we are against it; it should never be done. Whatever has started there should be broken down and cleared away from Prempeh College,” Senior K.F Asante, a former president of the Old Boys Association has said.
A petition was signed by the old students to stop the encroachment.
