The Ketu South, Fifi Kwetey has said President Nana Akufo-Addo engaged in “immature politics” in his criticism of the Mahama administration’s handling of the agriculture sector.

“I find it a bit sad that the President is continuing on this childish way of always demonizing everything he has met in order to appear as if he is doing something special.”

“You don’t need to destroy what somebody has done for you in order for people to appreciate what you have done. But that seems to be the obsession of the President and many of his people,” Mr. Kwetey said on Eyewitness News.

President Akufo-Addo, speaking at the 34th National Farmers’ Day celebration in Tamale, said the agriculture sector was on the decline when he became President.

“It is important to put on record that Ghana’s agriculture was put in a state of decline when I became President. Prior to 2017, the performance of the sector has been erratic, recording a growth rate of 0.8% in 2011, one of the lowest in modern times.  It improved albeit slightly to 3.1% in 2016; that too was a no better story.  This growth pattern was a lack of prioritization and support for the agriculture sector by the previous Government.”

Mr. Kwetey said he would have expected Ghana to have grown past this brand of politics.

“I can understand if we were doing this in ’93 or ’94 or the year 2000 or even in 2004 but 25 years after we started this journey; for anyone to still think that your government can look special is to always want to demonise the previous government, I think we need to outgrow this.”

Mr. Kwetey also reminded that the $120m seed money secured for Planting for Food and Jobs initiative was secured by the Mahama government.

“So if you come and take financing that another government has secured in order for you to grow your agenda, the least you can do is to show gratitude.”
