The Central Regional Police Command in collaboration with the International Justice Mission has organized a two-day workshop for officers of the Anti- Human Trafficking Unit of the Ghana Police Service in Winneba.
Officers were drawn from all divisions and districts within the region to partake in the training which was aimed at building their capacities in addressing child trafficking.
The Swedru Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Samuel Yankee in a Citi News interview indicated that the Police Service attach a lot of seriousness to human trafficking hence the training.
“We will work had in fighting child trafficking in this region” Chief Superintendent Yankee explained.
According to the Swedru Divisional Commander, children in the Central Region have been identified as potential source of recruitment by these traffickers adding that personnel at the various barriers and snap checkpoints within the Region have also been informed to be on the lookout.
“Our officers at the various check points have been put on high alert to be on the lookout for human traffickers” the commander explained.
Steve Miano, the Director of Investigations and Law Enforcement Development at International Justice Missions expressed his outfit’s commitment in partnering with the Ghana Police Service in the fight against human trafficking.
“We are ready to partner the police in the fight against crime” Steve Miano noted.
Child trafficking is among the major crimes tackled by the country’s police service, with most children being trafficked to work on farmlands and on the high seas.
Some children are also trafficked to herd cattle.
