Free SHS: YEA, GES to recruit over 7,000 youth to serve as non-teaching staff

The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) will be recruiting about 7,730 youth to help support non-teaching staff under the free Senior High School policy.

The recent increase in enrollment at second cycle institution-level has necessitated the need for such initiative.

Speaking at the signing of an MoU between the GES and YEA, the Director-General of Ghana Education service Professor Kwasi Opoku Amankwa indicated that there is the need to employ more non-teaching staff to reduce the pressure on existing staff members.

“Looking at the numbers especially when we started the double-track, we needed to augment the numbers, especially our kitchen staff and security. So we have been engaged with the YEA for some time now and thankfully we have got to the point that we have been able to employ staff for security and kitchen. We need the numbers to do the rotation we talked about.”

Also speaking at the program dubbed the ‘School Support Program’ the Chief Executive Officer of YEA, Justin Kodua Frimpong said come Thursday, the information on the recruitment will be made available to the public.

“As an agency, we are not going to saying everything is in the pipeline. The moment we sign on the MOU, the first day we are going to do the advertisement for the young people in this country to take advantage of the job opportunities that will arise as a result of this MOU.  In all, we are looking at recruiting people to augment the Free Senior High School Policy. But it is also in line with the several innovations we have to introduce as an agency.”

The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) was established under the Youth Employment Act 2015 (Act 887) to empower young people to contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic and sustainable development of the nation.

Its objective is to support the youth between the ages of 15 to 35 years through skills training and internship modules to transit from a situation of unemployment to that of employment.
