The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has expressed its dismay at the gory head-on collision on the Kintampo-Tamale highway which claimed the lives of over 30 people on Monday, March 9, 2020.
According to the NRSA, drivers have been educated enough to avoid such crashes.
A number of passengers in the vehicles were burnt beyond recognition after the wreckage caught fire.
31 passengers perished in the crash.
The Director of Planning and Programs for the National Road Safety Authority, Ing. David Osafo Adonteng in an interview said the Authority’s preliminary checks indicate that the crash was a result of driver error.
“We find it very disappointing and very unfortunate that such a crash happened. We have got the information from the police that the death toll has risen to 31 and per our observation; we are attributing this crash to driver error. We have looked at the road infrastructure and the vehicles and there’s nothing suggesting that it’s coming with some deficiency associated with the vehicle.”
Meanwhile the Municipal Chief Executive for Kintampo North, Michael Sarkodie Baffoe is calling for an immediate stakeholder meeting to find a lasting solution to crashes on the stretch.
“All the stakeholders will have to come together and I mean the Municipal assembly, the MTTD of the police and also the transport unions and their drivers. We will have to come to terms with the fact that this is a bad situation that needs to be looked at, tackled and finality brought to it. We cannot completely erode accidents from the systems but we can bring it to the barest minimum to their effect on society,” the MCE stated.
Kintampo-Tamale Highway Accident
At least 31 people perished after two buses collided on the Kintampo-Tamale Highway around 3 am on Monday, March 9, 2020.
The vehicles caught fire after the crash. Passengers of both vehicles were burnt.
One of the buses involved in the crash was from Bawku and was headed to Techiman when the crash occurred near an area called Dawadawa No 2. It had about 11 passengers on board.
The other vehicle was a Sprinter bus with about 23 passengers.
