Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the North Tongu constituency has urged the government to insist on local content in its negotiations with social media network, Twitter for the establishment of its continental headquarters in Ghana.
Mr. Ablakwa is of the view that the decision will enable job creation for Ghanaian youth in the tech space.
The social media network announced its decision to establish its African Headquarters in Ghana on Monday, April 12, 2021.
According to Twitter, the move will grant the company the opportunity to “be more immersed in the rich and vibrant communities that drive the conversations taking place every day across the African continent.”
It also explained that the reason behind choosing Ghana as its Africa headquarters is because the country is the champion for democracy, and also practices freedom of speech and online freedom.
Since the announcement, many Ghanaians have expressed their excitement over the news.
The North Tongu legislator described the announcement as “fantastic news”.
“Twitter’s selection of Ghana to host and lead its Africa operations is absolutely fantastic news that must excite all nationalists.”
“It is my hope that negotiations will be keen on strong local content in order that Ghana’s young talented tech army derive maximum benefit.”
Already, Twitter has advertised employment opportunities for its office in Ghana.
