Relatives of persons who lost their lives as well as those who sustained injuries during the 2020 Techiman South Constituency elections have sued the state for compensation for the damages suffered.

The suit was filed in June 2021, according to a lawyer for the families, Osman Alhassan.

“For each of the people who died, we are claiming an amount of GHS10 million, and we are claiming various amounts for the injured ones in accordance with the extent of their injury,” he said to Citi News.

The two deceased were 39-year-old Tajudeen Alhassan and 18-year-old Abdallah Ayaric.

Security personnel opened fire on agitated onlookers at the Brokyepem Hall in the Techiman South constituency.

The compensation demanded by the injured people ranges from GHS3 million to GHS 5 million.

“We took instructions from the clients. We met them and then thereafter we drafted the processes and filed,” Mr. Alhassan said.

Though the suit was filed two months ago, the lawyer feels the news is now coming out because of the petition that was sent to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice by some MPs.

Two Minority MPs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, filed the petition for a probe into the violence recorded during the 2020 polls.

The petition is lodged against the Ministers for Interior and Defence, the Inspector General of Police, and the Chief of Defence staff.

It is to cover the incidents in the Techiman South, Odododiodio, Ablekuma Central, and Savelugu constituencies in the Bono East, Greater Accra, and Northern Regions.

There are currently two Private Member’s motions in Parliament currently seeking to probe the violence recorded in the 2020 elections.
