The Fettehman Senior High School in Gomoa Fetteh in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region is struggling to survive as a result of a lack of adequate infrastructure in the school.
The school which was established by the United Nations for Refugee settlers who migrated to Ghana during the Liberian war have not received enough support from the government making the delivery of teaching and learning difficult.
Teachers of the school trek miles to school on a regular basis as a result of the lack of accommodation for them.
Schoolchildren are forced to sit under trees to eat as a result of the lack of a dining hall.
The situation has become worse since the headmistress of the school whose duty it is to monitor students has no accommodation on campus.
The same can be said of the teachers of the school who also struggle for accommodation.
According to Elvis Joe Annan, the Board Chairman of the School, the population of the school is enormous and does not correlate with the infrastructure in the school.
The school has begun the construction of a bungalow complex for the headmistress of the school to enable her to monitor activities on campus.
Although the project has begun, the school needs more support to complete the project the board chairman noted.
“The situation in the school is terrible. I can’t imagine sending my child to a school that is struggling with accommodation. We have over one thousand four hundred students. Rooms that are meant for the head prefects are now being occupied by teachers. As a board we are not happy with the status quo that is why we have begun the construction of a bungalow for the head teacher,” Elvis Joe Annan said.
“We are calling on the owners of the school that is the government to come to our aid. Can you imagine that we don’t even have a kitchen to even cook,” the board chair said.
Speaking to Citi News at the 10th-anniversary celebration of the school Elvis Joe Annan indicated that the anniversary celebration should be a wake-up call for authorities to help fix the challenges of the school.
“Today we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the school and this should be a wake-up call for authorities to fix the school which serves a lot of people within the Gomoa enclave,” the board chairman noted.
First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei Owusu who was in attendance urged the Member of Parliament for the area Desmond Degraft Paitoo to raise concerns on the floor of Parliament.
“I have asked the Member of Parliament for the area to raise concerns on the floor of Parliament regarding the lack of infrastructure. This is because there are a lot of people vying for various projects across the county so you need to be able to table it before Parliament for onward action,” Joe Osei Owusu said.
The headmistress of the school Stella Mawutor Kwame reiterated the need for the school to have well-equipped facilities indicating that this will improve the overall performance of students.
“We will be happy if government stretches a hand of support to us as a school. The struggles are too much and it’s about time we address them,” Stella Mawutor Kwame said.
Central Regional Director of Education Emmanuel Essuman tells Citi News although they are aware of most of the challenges confronting the school in the Central Region, they are doing the best in resolving them”Stella Mawutor Kwame noted.
During the event, some hardworking students and teachers were presented with awards for their hard work and dedication towards the school.
