The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is advocating for a percentage of the Assemblies’ Common Fund to be allocated for the purchase of life jackets for people who travel by boat on major water bodies in the country.
According to George Ayisi Boateng, Director of Communications for NADMO, the government must intervene to ensure the safety of travellers on these water bodies.
This call to action follows the tragic drowning of ten people, including two minors, on Tuesday evening when a boat they were travelling in capsized on the Oti River.
Seven people were rescued, while three others remain missing.
In a Citi News interview, Mr. Ayisi Boateng said the provision of life jackets for travellers must be made mandatory.
“I thought it should be a mandatory order from the government for the assemblies to commit, especially those along the banks of rivers, to commit a percentage of the Common Fund to purchase life jackets and then giving them to boat owners so that as they get missing or spoiled, then the boot owners are compelled to replace them.”
