The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed concerns over the number of voters the Electoral Commission (EC) announced as registered for the upcoming December polls.
The EC recently reported that over eighteen million voters have been registered.
However, the NDC claims these figures are inaccurate.
In an interview with Citi News, Dr Rashid Tanko-Computer, Deputy Director of Elections and IT, NDC stated that the EC has assured them that its IT department will provide clarification on this issue at the next Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting.
“If somebody [EC] comes to tell you that I have registered 18,960,000 [18,690,000] as of now that is my registration figure, for the 2024 elections, barring that I’m not going to add mop-up. That means I’m going to campaign based on 18,690,000. that is what I’m going to be campaigning on. That is what you announced to me, and so, if you are giving me the provisional registered voter number, I’m expecting 18,690,000.
“But when I go and interrogate the figure and I look at your figure of 2020, I look at the whole figure of 2023 and I look at your current figure of 2024, and I put them together and I’m not getting 18, 690, 000. Should I fold my arms and say it’s not an issue. So, they are bringing their IT department with an admission that there’s something wrong with the figure. If there was nothing wrong, they would have said it there,” Dr Tanko-Computer asked.
Meanwhile, the Director of Elections for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Evans Nimako, stated that the NPP has closely monitored the voter registration process.
He said that the party was working with figures provided by their agents to ensure accuracy and transparency in the electoral process.
“From day one when even the 2024 limited voter registration started, and the EC churned out some figures, the NDC came to say that for what they have gotten from their various centres, it doesn’t match up. The EC said yes, our IT department had some challenges here and there and the accurate figures will be given.
“…Those figures do they still match up or don’t? It is between the NDC and the EC, we don’t speak for the EC. But for us, what we got from our agents in the various registration centres, we put them together… If you have it already, do you come out crying, I mean you’re not that kind of babies who take biscuits before they will stop crying,” Mr Nimako said.
