Cecil Nii Obodai Wentum, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Highway Authority, has attributed the many road projects in the country that have stalled to the government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
Several road projects have stalled, prompting concerns from stakeholders, including motorists and passengers.
However, speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, Mr Wentum expressed concerns about the impact of the debt exchange programme on road projects, citing the current financial challenges facing the country.
He assured that work will resume on the stalled projects soon.
“You are also aware that as a country, we have gone through some financial challenges. And this debt exchange programme has also affected a number of projects that the government started. I don’t speak for the government, I speak for the authority and I can tell you that a number of our projects that we have started have been affected as a result of the debt exchange programme.
“And I would want to assure the people of Ghana that, definitely we’re going to go through this and you will see most of our projects coming back, and we will see some good news,” Wentum assured.
On 5th December 2022, the Government of Ghana launched Ghana’s Domestic Debt Exchange programme, an invitation for the voluntary exchange of approximately GHS137 billion of the domestic notes and bonds of the Republic, including E.S.L.A. and Daakye bonds, for a package of New Bonds to be issued by the Republic.
Ghana’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme was launched to put the country’s debt on a sustainable path.
