The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) says it will legally deal with persons unlawfully encroaching on the Dodowa and Katamanso forest reserves in the region.
This follows the declaration of the forest reserves as a security zone in response to concerns of increasing encroachment by private developers.
The Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Security Council, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover addressing journalists on measures to deal with the matter, emphasised the council’s commitment to preserving the forests.
According to him, the council is working together with the Forestry Commission to replant trees to put the forests in their original shape.
He added that individuals who are claiming ownership of land in Obosomase must produce documentation to support their claims, which will be verified through the Lands Commission
Titus-Glover indicated that the council would engage with stakeholders to ensure a peaceful resolution to any disputes and prevent clashes between residents of Dodowa and Obosomase.
“So, this morning, we have met and the REGSEC have resolved that Dodowa Forest, Katamanso-Pinkwai Forest, is declared a security zone. I repeat, Dodowa Forest, Katamanso-Pinkwai Forest has been declared a security zone. We don’t want to see any human activity in the way of construction at these two forests. Number two, REGSEC will arrange with the Forestry Commission and will go to these two forests and replant these trees back to regain the forest.”
“Number three, those who are claiming to be owners from Obosomase must produce their documents. The Shais too will also produce their documents then we will liaise with the Lands Commission because there’s a complete boundary between the Eastern Region and the Greater Accra Region so that will bring sanity into these two regions.”
“Our duty as Regional Security Council is to protect lives and property so we don’t want any clashes between residents of Dodowa and people from Obosomase. So, that we’re able to go into this matter appropriately. So, ladies and gentlemen, this morning, this is a brief that the REGSEC want to share with the public that all activities at the Dodowa Forest must cease immediately… We’ll liaise with the Forestry Commission as REGSEC members go there and plant these trees to regain this forest back. If anybody said he’s the owner of this land, he should show the documents,” Titus-Glover stated.
