A former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma Central, Victor Okuley Nortey has passed away.
His death was announced by Jefferson Kwamina Sackey, the NPP parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma Central and Deputy Director of Communications at the Presidency, in a Facebook post on Sunday, August 18.
According to Sackey, Mr. Nortey died at age 66 at the Nyaho Clinic in Accra on August 18, 2024, after a brief illness.
Mr Nortey was first elected as MP in a 1999 by-election and served from March 26, 1999, to January 6, 2009, making him the longest-serving MP for the Ablekuma Central constituency.
He was born in 1958 in the Greater Accra Region.
According to Mr Sackey, the deceased was his campaign manager during the 2023 NPP primary, describing the deceased as a dedicated and invaluable guide.
He has suspended his ongoing Listening Tour and all other campaign activities for three days as a sign of respect and to honour Mr Nortey’s memory.
The family is yet to make an official statement about his demise.
