The newly reconstructed and expanded Tarkwa and Abosso Stadium, with a seating capacity of 10,400, has been officially handed over to the National Sports Authority (NSA) after four years of rehabilitation work.
The $16 million project, funded by Gold Fields Ghana Foundation as part of its corporate social responsibility, was completed following FIFA specifications.
At the handing-over ceremony in Tarkwa, Youth anefd Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif praised Gold Fields for demonstrating the power of collaboration in development.
He noted that the stadium’s redevelopment was a fulfilment of the community’s expectation for investment from major mining companies in the area.
The refurbished stadium, built by a Ghanaian contractor, features modern installations and is capable of hosting international matches.
Gold Fields Ghana’s Acting Vice President, Elliot Twum, highlighted the benefits of the stadium’s construction, including a boost for local businesses.
The Executive Secretary of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, Abdel-Razak Yakubu, explained the motivation behind the $16 million investment, citing the company’s commitment to community development.
The ceremony included ceremonial football matches between former Black Star players and Gold Fields staff, as well as a match between Medeama and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
