The Ghana Institution of Engineering has emphasised the need for educating motorists about road traffic regulations to help reduce crashes.
The institution believes that regulations can be effectively enforced if drivers are well-informed about their responsibilities when they get behind the steering wheel.
This follows a series of road accidents in areas such as East Legon, on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, and the Kumasi-Obuasi stretch, among others.
Speaking to Citi News, the President of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, Ing. Kwabena Bempong, urged the police to take appropriate action to improve road safety.
“We would appeal to them [the police] that during this time, apart from just stopping people for minor offences, they should caution a lot of people so that our minds will be brought back home, as I would put it. So let us remind them [drivers] of the responsibilities that they carry when they are driving, especially for the commercial drivers.
Ing. Bempong also advised motorists to exercise caution, particularly as the general election and Christmas season approaches.
“There is a lot of caution that is required of drivers or motorists. When you are driving, practice what we call defensive driving, where you anticipate that anything can happen so that we will reduce the accident rate during this yuletide.
“We all know that getting to holidays or getting to times when there are going to be elections, some people may be so excited and they will be driving just anyhow.”
