Franklin Cudjoe, the President of IMANI Africa, has voiced his dissatisfaction regarding the insufficient emphasis on the factors contributing to corruption in the manifestos of political parties participating in the forthcoming December elections.
He pointed out that the strategies proposed by these political parties to combat corruption tend to be ambiguous and lack precise targeting.
Cudjoe emphasised that the manifestos do not adequately address the fundamental causes of corruption in Ghana.
He stressed that the political parties prioritise the establishment of anti-corruption frameworks, which he contended frequently fail to produce significant outcomes.
Cudjoe made these remarks at an event organised by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) in Accra on Thursday, November 14, 2024, on the topic “Elections and Anti-Corruption: What is the Next Government’s Agenda?”.
“Most of the manifestos we’ve seen are vague on corruption. None of them critically address the drivers of corruption in Ghana, and that is sad. The parties mostly focus on building systems instead of addressing the process that leads to corruption.”
IMANI Africa President expressed his disapproval of the manifestos for failing to outline strategies for engaging with and utilising the office of the Special Prosecutor, which plays a crucial role in combating corruption.
He emphasised that, if employed properly, the Special Prosecutor’s office has the potential to strengthen anti-corruption initiatives and yield more favourable results
“None of the manifestos target reforming the excessive control of the public procurement system, and none touch on leveraging the office of the Special Prosecutor to deepen the fight against corruption. Maybe there is a reason for that, as the Special Prosecutor has recently said that he’s done his best.”
