Frederick Opare-Ansah, Campaign Manager for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s team, has defended the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s economic performance, stating that it has not failed in managing the economy despite significant challenges.
In an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Friday, November 8, Opare-Ansah emphasized the resilience of the current administration amid global pressures.
“We [NPP] haven’t failed in any single one of those points,” he remarked, urging Ghanaians to consider what the economic situation might have looked like if former President John Mahama had remained in power.
Reflecting on Mahama’s tenure, Opare-Ansah noted that the economy experienced an annual growth rate of 8.8% from 2012 but dropped to 3.4% by the end of Mahama’s term in 2016.
“When there was no challenge at all from 2012 to 2017 when he took over from Atta-Mills the economy was growing at 8.8%. By the time he exited 2016 it had shrunk, it was growing at 3.4% so imagine going through COVID and all that it represented, Russia Ukraine where would we have been by now.”
He attributed some of the current administration’s economic difficulties to external factors, including the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, which have strained economies worldwide.
“Imagine going through COVID and all that it represented; where would we have been by now?” he questioned, suggesting that the NPP’s management has been crucial in navigating these turbulent times.
