Parliamentary impasse: We’ll engage Speaker – Afenyo-Markin

The Majority caucus in Parliament has resolved to engage Speaker Alban Bagbin to address the ongoing parliamentary impasse.

Speaker Bagbin, during a media interaction on Wednesday, November 6, expressed disappointment over the Majority’s failure to reach out to him amid the deadlock. He subsequently adjourned the House indefinitely on November 7, citing the lack of a prepared agenda from the Business Committee as a barrier to proceedings.

The recall session, initiated by the Majority, was expected to address critical issues, but their absence in the Chamber led to stalled deliberations. Speaker Bagbin emphasized that without input from committees and a formal agenda, the House could not function effectively.

Addressing the media on November 7, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin assured that his caucus is prepared to engage the Speaker to find a resolution. He also expressed optimism about a positive outcome, stating that they would rely on legal provisions should their efforts to negotiate fail.

“We look forward to engaging Mr Speaker, in the few hours and days. We pray that he does the needful. If he doesn’t do the needful, we will continue to rely on the law to get the right things done.”

He warned that the partisan politics infested on them by the Minority wil not work.

“The partisan politics they are infesting on us in the chamber must end, Parliament is a chamber for decent people, parliament is a chamber for tolerant democrats.”

This latest adjournment comes amid ongoing tensions between the Majority and Minority caucuses over which side is the majority in the House impacting parliamentary proceedings in recent weeks.

With the indefinite adjournment, it remains uncertain when Parliament will reconvene to address the stalled issues, leaving the legislative agenda for this session in a state of flux.
